Whattup wit tha handle? Snoop Dogg, that is. The fact is that Snoop Dogg was nicknamed Snoopy as a child because he loved the Peanuts characters and because he reminded his mother of the character Snoopy, the dog. So he chose the stage name Snoop Doggy Dogg and changed it to just Snoop Dogg in 1998.
Snoop Dogg is one of the most enduring and prolific members of the gangsta rap scene. Snoop Dogg has been putting out his brand of music since 1992 and it doesn’t look like he is slowing down any time soon. Right now, Snoop Dogg is on tour in the U.S. with over 30 venues planned between June and August, 2008. Like the Dogg says…UGot2Do It! His new album is “Ego Trippin’” released this year.
Besides a tour schedule that would make your head spin, Snoop Dogg is also working on another album to be released sometime in late 2008/early 2009. The album is tentatively titled “Malice in Wonderland”. Could be some copyright issues there Dogg – there is a band called Malice in Wonderland and it is also the name of a hit song for the band Nazareth. Anyway, that’s probably why the title of the next album release is “tentative”.
Snoop Dogg hasn’t always been on easy street. There was a time when Snoop Dogg lived on the streets, haunting the slums and looking for drugs. Snoop Dogg was well known to the cops as a cocaine dealer and in 1993 he was nailed and sent to prison for three years. For the past 15+ years, Snoop Dogg has been arrested numerous times, mostly for pot, but also firearms possession. Wattup! A gangsta rappin’ hippie!
What’s really amazing about Snoop Dogg is his staying power and success all the while getting into legal problems due to his lifestyle. Snoop Dogg has put out 9 studio albums, all of which went platinum. Snoop Dogg’s ‘rap’ sheet on his accomplishments from hit singles to music videos and television appearances is staggering. It’s almost a wonder he’s got time to smoke the hippie as much as he does. Snoop Dogg may not be for everyone but he has a huge following in the gansta’ rap/hip hop music scene and lately he’s been spotted at some high brow places – golf tournaments and charitable events. Could it be that Snoop Dogg’s lyrics have mellowed at least a little? One thing seems for sure, Snoop Dogg ain’t goin’ anywhere but up!
